the war in vietnam was not going well. the decision was put forward, driven by curtis lemay, to start bombing north vietnam. a war game was pulled together at the pentagon to discuss the efficacy of doing that. i was a cia representative on the blue team, representing the american forces. we had a heated argument at the working level as to whether we should or should not start bombing north vietnam. i felt it would be useless and argued against the bombing from the beginning. i was supported only by the state department representative. everybody else was all for bombing. we were outvoted. the general in charge said will you sit down and write and tell legend says of the effectiveness of bombing? he did not tell me to follow the dictates of the vote. he just said it right what you think is going to happen. so i did. then disappears, the top-level group, which included maxwell taylor, the director of the cia, and the number of other living varies came in. there was a heated discussion, but they decided to go ahead with the b

it used to come out of vietnam, cambodia, laos, and burma. i had the opportunity to work in south vietnam in 67 and 68 and has been quite a bit of time in regard operations in the northern half of cambodia, laos, burma, and north vietnam. i am very much aware of the cia, air america, deals made with some of the lords. guest: alex, it's -- it is interesting that you spent time in vietnam during that time and got a sense of it on the ground. what happened in afghanistan is a function of their other agrarian markets shutting down. they had grown cotton, pomegranates, other things. these were real coveted ojects -- products. the soviet invasion cost infrastructu to be destroyed, factories that process cotton, for example. by the time the soviets had left, afghanistan had discovered a few things. first, that all this infrastructure had been destroyed. infrastructure had been destroyed. secondly, they had destroyed products like orland and pistachios and etc.. there were drug suppliers who were looking for a place where poppies could be grown. pred

there were people who thought would be another vietnam. there were many people who believed that this whole thing was a fool's errand and that in general, it was foolish for us to be involved. you saw the film said 70% of the people were against us sending troops there even after the whole peace accord was completed, after dayton was signed, the opposition was 58% i tried to put together an aid package for russia because they could not afford to bring their soldiers home from the baltic states. 74% of the american people were against that an 81% were against aid to mexico. they voted against our aggressive early involvement in kosovo after we had gone through the agony of bosnia. this was a tumultuous and contentious time. there's a lesson in all that. for the politicians. people higher presidents to win for america. in foreign policy, you have to put you oar in the water for what you believe is in the best interest in the country and our values for the world and if you are right, it will come out all right. if you are not, it doesn't matt
